Chargers News · Todd Lipe is Chargers new Head Football Coach!


Ayden-Grifton High School is proud to announce Todd Lipe as the next Head Football Coach of the Chargers. We are excited to have Coach Lipe lead the next era of Ayden-Grifton Football. After numerous conversations, it became clear that Coach Lipe’s experience, dedication, and passion for the game of football made him the perfect person to fill the role. The relationships Coach Lipe has built with our staff, players and community over the last 6 years are a validation of the traits he values and wishes to instill in our football program.

Comment from Dr. Cayton: “I am excited for the torch to be passed from one great coach to another. I feel that Coach Lipe’s integrity will carry on the many traditions that have been established over the years at Ayden-Grifton High School.”

Coach Lipe has served as the Defensive Coordinator for the Chargers since 2014. In that time the Chargers have made the playoffs each season while also being the Eastern Carolina 2A Conference Champions twice. Coach Lipe’s defenses are known for their technique and physicality.

Prior to coming to Ayden-Grifton, he spent time as the head coach at J.H. Rose High School from 2008-2012. Before taking over as head coach at J.H. Rose, coach spent 7 years there as the Defensive Coordinator, Assistant Head Coach, and Defensive Backs Coach. In his time at J. H. Rose he contributed to 2 conference championships, 4 consecutive state titles and a 42 game winning streak.  Coach Lipe also had stops at A.L Brown High School and as a Defensive Graduate Assistant at the Univerity of North Carolina after a 5-year stint at Richmond County Senior High School. While at Richmond County coach served as the Defensive Coordinator and Defensive Backs Coach while winning back to back state titles, and another 31 game winning streak. Charleston Southern University was the start of Coach Lipe’s career where he served as Defensive Line Coach in 1991 before heading to Washington High School to become Defensive Coordinator, Defensive Line, and Linebackers Coach for 4 years.
After graduating from East Rowan High School as a football standout, Coach continued his career at Catawba College as a linebacker and became a Two-Time All-American. While playing at Catawba College he was also a 3-time All-Conference Selection, Team MVP in 1990, and served as Team Captain for 3 years. In 2009 Coach Lipe was inducted into the Catawba College Hall of Fame for his outstanding career. In addition, serving as a Social Studies teacher Coach Lipe also serves as the Varsity Golf Coach at Ayden-Grifton.
